The New York bus accident that left 15 people dead last year was caused by a severely fatigued bus driver who also had a poor driving record, the National Transportation Safety Board stated in a report.

Both the driver -- who the NTSB board said had had little sleep for days -- and his employer, World Wide Travel of Greater New York, came under fire in the report issued yesterday.

Newburgh residents understand the high-speed dangers of driving on highways. But even the most cautious, experienced driver has difficulty contending safely with other drivers who are inattentive.

According to the New York State Police, driver inattention is partly to blame for the horrific accident involving a tour bus and an 18-wheeler that left the trucker dead and 30 others injured about 250 miles northwest of Newburgh.

New York drivers must always guard against reckless or negligent drivers of other passenger vehicles. But this year more than any other in recent memory, drivers have also had to beware of commercial tour buses driven by fatigued drivers and distracted drivers.

They're causing traffic accidents that are leaving bus passengers and others with serious injuries and in too many cases, severe injuries that lead to fatalities. The latest New York bus crash happened yesterday about 30 miles south of Newburgh.

We've learned the hard way in 2011 that crashes involving buses so often involve injuries and even fatalities to large numbers of people who have put their trust in a company to provide a skilled, alert driver to provide safe transportation.

This year we've seen a rash of bus accidents, including the horrific one in March in New York that left 15 people dead.

Prosecutors make a sharp point about the driver of a bus on its way to New York City from a Connecticut this past March: he knew he was too tired to drive safely and he knew he didn't have a valid driver's license.

Fifteen people died in that bus crash in the Bronx on Interstate 95.

Federal Department of Transportation admit that they were about to shutter Sky Express two days before the bus accident, but granted the company a 10-day extension in which to appeal the decision.
